It Is Written Medisonship
Poem by Bush Poet Carol Heuchan, five times winner of the
Australian Bush Laureate awards, including 'Performer of the Year'.
Sometimes we need reminding of how easy life can be.
Of the things we take for granted and accept complacently.
Of the simple little comforts, of the things we just expect,
of the luxuries and trappings that our lifestyle will reflect
.
But we know that more important than the pleasures of our wealth
and more valuable than riches, to each person, is their health.
But over in the Solomons, through no fault of their own,
there are souls and bodies suffering that a Christian can’t condone.
When a country’s suffered conflict for long generations past,
then development is halted and the progress isn’t fast.
With an isolated region, with resources sparse and spare,
there’s an absence of the basics and a desperate need for care.
The Son Ship was already out supplying goods and wares
but a greater need was calling, on as yet unspoken prayers.
For these gentle, loving people, on their far secluded shore,
did not know that God was watching, did not know there could be more.
He sent to them the Olivers who saw their desperate plight,
saw the sickness and the dying, knew they had to make it right.
From the humblest of beginnings there was sewn a tiny seed –
a mission ship of mercy to help others in their need.
And to make this vision happen, they did all that they could do.
Though their dreams were sorely tested, still their Faith was strong and true.
When their efforts were exhausted and their hopes were almost smitten,
then there came along an Angel in the form of ‘It is Written.’
Medi Son Ship launched the vision (say it quickly and you’ll see)
that it’s doctors, nurses, healing and first aid for all and free.
But it’s also teaching Health Care and the smiling faces tell
that they value what they’re given and the love of God, as well.
Of course it needs financial aid to keep it all ‘afloat’
The doctoring’s ongoing and there’s fuel to run the boat.
And always more is needed, more supplies we must be buying,
but the cost’s inconsequential, if it saves one child from dying.
When you pop into the Pharmacy or visit your G.P.,
or you simply buy some bandaids when you’re on a shopping spree,
spare a thought for those for whom such things are way beyond their reach
and so follow in His footprints then, to help and heal and teach.
Just share with us the joy that helping others tends to give.
Your life, and theirs as well, will be a better life to live.
Come and be a part of Medisonship – you’re welcome. Come ‘on board.’
And the knowledge of your caring is your own and God’s reward.
